First Two Rounds of Aeroflot Open Played in Moscow

Sunday, March 3, Rounds 1 and 2 of the Aeroflot Open 2024 were played in The Carlton, Moscow. 142 chess players from 11 countries are taking part in the main international tournament, and 329 young players are competing at the stage of the Russian Youth Cup.

Going into the first round, the participants were welcomed by Alexander Zhukov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Andrey Filatov, President of the Chess Federation of Russia, and Ilya Perfilyev, Aeroflot's Deputy General Director for Human Resources and Organisational Development. Alexander Zhukov made a symbolic first move in the Grischuk vs. Aleksandrov game.

Ivan Yermolayev, the winner of the "Famous Chess Tournaments" quiz, was a guest of the tournament. Alexander Tkachev, Executive Director of the Chess Federation of Russia, presented Ivan with a gift from the Chess Federation of Russia.

Going into day two, the rating favourite Alexander Grischuk, Pavel Ponkratov, Ilia Iljiushenok, Aleksey Grebnev, Roman Kezin, Artem Uskov (all from Russia), Manuel Petrosyan, Hovik Hayrapetyan (both from Armenia), Maksim Tsaruk (Belarus), and Bibisara Assaubayeva (Kazakhstan) are with two out of two points.

A 13-year-old Artem Uskov has scored victories over such experienced grandmasters as Konstantin Sakaev and Boris Savchenko.


Half a point behind the leaders are as many as 34 participants.
